World Languages

In order to thrive in our increasingly global society, it is essential to be linguistically and culturally equipped in English and another world language. Proficiency in more than one language opens doors to communicate across cultures, expand perspectives, strengthen cognitive and creative thinking, access information first-hand, and deepen awareness of the connections between language and culture.

At Northwood High School, we believe that all students can and should have the opportunity to learn another language. Our World Language courses are academic electives designed to build communication proficiency and intercultural competence. Each course is yearlong, and successful completion is required to advance to the next level.

We proudly offer a comprehensive World Languages program, including:

  • American Sign Language (ASL) 1–4 Honors
  • French 1–4 Honors
  • Korean 1–3 (with plans to expand to 4 Honors)
  • Spanish 1–4 Honors & AP Spanish

Students may begin language study at the level most appropriate to their background and are encouraged to pursue advanced levels to develop true proficiency and cultural understanding.
